11/2003:
Medigenomix Expands Cooperation with Wildlife Parks in the US

Medigenomix started cooperation with Jungle Eyes, a Non-Profit-Organization USDA Licensed Exhibitors Parks & Wildlife Rehabilitator's located in Willis, Texas (Montgomery County).

One of Jungle Eyes’ goals is the conservation of species that are endangered of extinction. Those species could be rescued by genetic controlled breeding programs. Medigenomix therefore checks the genetic background of the mated animals to avoid an inbreeding effect on these programs.

In rare avian species with birds staying together a lifetime, it is necessary to determine the gender of the birds for a successful breeding. As a specialist of sex determination Medigenomix provides these tests for its new partner.

Medigenomix - Experts in Handling Ancient DNA

The experienced laboratory team of Medigenomix GmbH has expanded its cooperation with the American Museum of National History. In a first project, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the scientists succeeded in drawing up DNA-fingerprints from 30.000 years old mammoth bones, by microsatellite analysis. The habitats of these bones are in Alaska and Siberia. The aim was to find out possible relationship among the mammoths, to get conclusions of the migration behaviour of this extinct species.

The excellent results of our experts have convinced our US-American partner and they expanded the cooperation: The Medigenomix team is now working with samples of extinct musk ox and more over 100 years old pieces of rat skin.

09/2003:
Medigenomix Acquires an Exclusive License for the Use of Genetic Polymorphisms in G-Proteins for Applications in Pharmacogenetics

Medigenomix, a subsidiary of the Eurofins Group based in Munich/Germany, recently signed an exclusive license agreement with SNiP Biotech GmbH & Co KG, Essen, for patented SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) in the gene GNB3 coding for a G-protein subunit. As G-proteins play a central role in the signal transduction of all human cells, these SNPs can be used for multiple applications, both in pharmacogenetics and in predictive medicine.

Moreover, a contract for consultancy was signed with Prof. Dr. Winfried Siffert, Department of Pharmacology at the University of Duisburg-Essen Medical School. Prof. Dr. Winfried Siffert is one of the leading experts with long-term experience in the detection and validation of polymorphisms in genes encoding G-proteins. His support will provide the Medigenomix customers with professional advice and assures that they can benefit from additional proprietary SNPs that are currently in the final validation steps.

01/2003:
"Beef Gender Testing" Taken up in EU Legislation

EU export and import of beef carries a subsidy difference of some 130 Euro per 100 kg of meat depending on whether the beef is declared as male (considered to be higher quality) or female.

This subsidy difference requires strict legislation to ensure the correct gender declaration of beef at the EU level. On request of DG Agriculture (market division for livestock and beef), the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM, www.irmm.jrc.be/) evaluated the available methods and proposed the most promising DNA technique. As a result genetic gender testing has now been taken up into EC Regulation 765/2002 and entered into force on 1.7.2002.

Since years Medigenomix has been testing the gender of cattle embryos. With this long term experience our team can offer a reliable and fast gender testing service.
